Congratulations to Kishore Appunhi Nair as one of this year’s student poster competition winners at the U.S. National Congress on Computational Mechanics!
Advised by Somnath Ghosh, Kishore presented his research on understanding how the microscopic features of metal parts affect when and where failure occurs under stress. His physics-based, machine learning-embedded model better predicts fatigue failure by considering real data at the microstructural level. When compared to traditional models, the new model captures more realistic behavior, particularly in complex components like jet engine disks. The findings will allow engineers to design safer, more reliable parts with a longer lifespan and better overall performance.
